Come and See, Go and Tell: Session 1
The Ripple Effect: How Your Invitation Can Change Eternity
Have you ever had one of those "small world" moments? You know, when you discover an unexpected connection with someone through a mutual friend or acquaintance? It's a reminder of how interconnected we all are. But what if I told you that this interconnectedness could have eternal significance?
In our recent study of 1 Corinthians 9, we learned about the importance of sharing the Gospel. Today, I want to show you the incredible opportunity we have to make an eternal impact through a simple invitation: "Come and see." # The Chain Reaction of Faith In John chapter 1, verses 35-51, we see a fascinating chain of influence that starts with John the Baptist and ripples outward. Let's break it down:
1. John the Baptist points to Jesus: "Behold the Lamb of God!" (John 1:36)
2. Two of John's disciples follow Jesus
3. Andrew, one of those disciples, finds his brother Simon Peter
4. Jesus calls Philip
5. Philip finds Nathanael
Each link in this chain had a personal encounter with Jesus and then invited others to "come and see" for themselves. It's a beautiful picture of how our faith can influence people beyond what we might imagine. # The Power of a Simple Invitation What strikes me about this passage is the simplicity of the invitation. When Nathanael expressed skepticism about Jesus coming from Nazareth, Philip didn't argue or try to convince him. He simply said, "Come and see" (John 1:46).
Sometimes, we overcomplicate evangelism. We think we need to have all the answers or be expert theologians. But often, the most powerful thing we can do is invite people to experience Jesus for themselves. # Your Influence Matters You might be thinking, "But I'm not John the Baptist or one of the disciples. How can my invitation make a difference?" Here's the truth: we can all influence people to find and follow Jesus.
In fact, I want you to personalize this. Fill in the blank: "[Your name] can influence people to find and follow Jesus."
It's not about having a big platform or being a gifted speaker. It's about being willing to share your experience with Jesus and inviting others to do the same. # Come and See, Go and Tell The pattern we see in John 1 is clear:
1. Come and see (experience Jesus personally)
2. Go and tell (invite others to experience Him)
This rhythm of discipleship and evangelism is like breathing – in and out, in and out. We come together as a church to be encouraged and grow, but we don't stay here. More ministry happens outside these walls than in them. # Putting It Into Practice So how can we apply this "Come and See, Go and Tell" principle in our lives? Here are some practical steps:
1. Identify someone in your life who needs to experience Jesus.
2. Pray for an opportunity to share your faith with them.
3. Extend a simple invitation: "Would you like to come to church with me this Sunday?"
4. Be ready to share how Jesus has transformed your life.
Remember, Jesus Christ alone can save and transform lives. Our role is to make the introduction and let Him do the rest.
As we go about our week, let's keep our eyes open for opportunities to invite others to "come and see" Jesus. And let's not forget our commission to "go and tell." As Jesus said, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15).
Who knows? Your simple invitation could be the start of a chain reaction that changes someone's eternity.
