When Anxiety Overwhelms: Finding God's Peace in Life's Chaos

Have you ever felt that crushing weight of "what if" scenarios playing on repeat in your mind? What if I fail? What if I let someone down? What if everything falls apart? That constant pressure in your chest, the sleepless nights, the feeling that you're drowning in uncertainty about tomorrow? Last week Marked my one year as a pastoral intern. That was super exciting... But honestly, it's kind of scary, right? Like, I'm going to leave for a week. Who knows what could happen when I'm gone? These were my thoughts as I prepared for my first mission trip to Panama and looked ahead to another year of ministry challenges. Maybe you can relate to that feeling - having all that fear over all the potential bad scenarios that could play out in your life. Britannica calls this anxiety: the feeling of fear or dread or apprehension that arises without clear or appropriate justification.

The Reality of Anxiety in Our World

Life gives us plenty of reasons to worry. Bad stuff can and will happen in our life in the future. It's going to happen. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. But here's what I discovered: we don't have to live in that fear, in that anxiety. I remember when I was in high school, I used to deal with anxiety big time. I had this constant pressure over me about the future... I remember just being physically sick about it, just this constant pressure. And it led me to depression, it led me to hopelessness. And ultimately that led me to the Lord. The world's approach to anxiety is grim. The University of California, Berkeley, says that eliminating anxiety isn't realistic. Instead, the goal should be treatment that reduces and manages anxiety. In other words, there's no solution, right? You have no hope. The best that we can offer you is a way to cope with this.

Jesus Offers a Different Solution

But Jesus has a different answer. In John 16:33, He says, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." Peace isn't found in a technique. It's not found in reaching some condition, right? Peace is found in a person and his name is Jesus Christ. If you don't know Jesus Christ personally by faith in His death, burial and resurrection, then peace is impossible. Biblical peace is not absent of trouble... But Biblical peace is this God given calm that comes from trusting in him. It's a settled assurance that God is in control of this trouble.

A Two-Step Process for Choosing Peace

Tonight, I want to show you from Philippians 4:6-7 how you can choose peace in anxious moments by following this two step process. The apostle Paul wrote these words from prison to a church facing persecution, false teachers, and internal division - people who had every human reason to be anxious. Let's read Philippians 4:6-7: "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Step 1: Don't Worry

Philippians 4, verse 6 says, "Be careful for nothing;" The word careful there is also translated anxious or worried. It comes from the Greek word merimnaō... And that word means to be torn in two different directions. Paul gives this clear command to God's people. And he says, stop worrying... So how many things should you be worried about? Not even one. Before you get frustrated with this command, remember that Jesus said it, not me, right? In Matthew 6, Jesus told people who usually only ate one meal a day, who lived hand to mouth not to worry about food, drink, or clothing. Jesus gave two reasons why we shouldn't worry:
  1. Worry is unproductive - "Which of you by worrying can add a cubit to your stature?" Worrying fixes nothing. It changes nothing.
  2. Worrying is unfaithful - "Your Heavenly Father... feeds the birds... He takes care of the flowers... don't you think that he'll take care of you?"
Worry doesn't remove tomorrow's problems, but it does steal today's peace. Worry and peace can't coexist.

Understanding the Weight of Life

Think of it this way: Stress is the weight of life divided by your ability to manage that weight. When school, time, money, and urgent demands exceed our capacity, we quickly realize I don't have the capacity to handle this. And what happens then? Anxiety, right? We break down from the weight. But God can carry that weight. As 1 Peter 5:7 says, "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." The word "casting" literally means to throw. Peter is saying, take the weight of anxiety off your shoulders and put it. Throw it on God's shoulders.

Step 2: Do Pray

Prayer is how we trade our burden for God's peace. But Paul doesn't prescribe just any prayer. In Philippians 4:6, he outlines four specific elements: 1. Prayer (Worship) - That's the word that means worship, right? Think of the Lord's prayer... "Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name." This acknowledges who God is. 2. Supplication (Petitions) - This is the idea of petitions, the idea of acknowledging our own inability... It's the idea that I need God. I can't do this alone. 3. Thanksgiving (Gratitude) - Thanksgiving is... the attitude of gratitude that should season every kind of prayer... This is really where anxiety starts to lose its power. When we're anxious, we're not being thankful. 4. Requests (Specific Needs) - Not just a general, like, I need help... But specifically, what do you need God to do?... God already knows what you need. He just wants you to depend on him for it.

What Happens When We Pray?

Does my problem go away? Does my situation automatically change? The answer is not necessarily right. But something does happen. And it's better than any circumstantial relief that we could ever experience. "When we pray, God's peace guards our heart." Philippians 4:7 promises that "the peace of God which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." The word "keep" means garrison. Stand watch like a soldier. God's peace watches over your heart and your mind, protecting you from spiritual anxiety. When you give your anxiety to God through prayer, he actively guards your hearts and mind... Prayer doesn't remove the pressure, but it puts a guard right between you and that pressure.

A Personal Testament to God's Peace

During COVID, I experienced this firsthand. Covid was the first time as a Christian that I really, really had anxiety. Facing uncertainty about my job as a nurse's aide and wanting to protect my family, I tried to face that chaos stoically... I'm the dad. I'm the man of the house. This is my responsibility. But when I finally went to the Lord in prayer... following the same pattern that Paul pointed us to, I asked specifically, Lord, show me what. Show me how I can do what you've called me to do. The result? Before anything changed outside, God gave me peace inside.

Putting It Into Practice

This is a daily battle, right? This isn't a one time fix... Every single day. You're going to have to fight the temptation to be anxious. But here's the good news: You don't have to fight alone anymore. God is fighting for you and he's giving you these two tools to win that battle on a daily basis. Don't worry, do pray and have peace.

Next Steps: Choosing Peace Today

If you're struggling with anxiety right now, remember that believers can have peace in him even when circumstances of life seem to demand that we be hopeless. Here's how to apply this two-step process:
  1. Stop trying to carry the weight alone - Recognize when you're torn between faith and fear and choose to trust God instead of leaning on your own understanding.
  2. Pray specifically using all four elements - Worship God for who He is, acknowledge your need for Him, thank Him for what He's already done, and make your specific requests known.
  3. Expect God's peace to stand guard - Trust that His peace will protect your heart and mind, even when circumstances don't immediately change.
If God is not your father and you haven't put your faith in Jesus Christ, then this process is not going to work for you. The first step to choosing peace is choosing Christ. You can pray right now: "Lord, I know that I'm a sinner. I believe that you died on the cross for my sins... And I want to do that right now." Remember, you don't have to live with anxiety. Like Horatio Spafford, who lost his four daughters in a shipwreck yet wrote "It Is Well With My Soul," you can find peace even in life's darkest moments. All God's children are welcome to run to his arms for peace at any moment. While anxiety may feel overwhelming, God is greater than that. And his peace is available the moment you turn to him in prayer.
