Worship with Purpose: Understanding God's Design for Church Gatherings

Have you ever wondered why we gather together as a church? Is it just tradition, or is there something deeper happening when believers assemble? As we've been walking through 1 Corinthians, we've discovered God's beautiful design for our gatherings—a design that prioritizes understanding, edification, and true worship.

God's Order Brings Understanding, Not Confusion

In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul addresses a chaotic situation in the Corinthian church. They were preferring showy spiritual gifts to the point of creating confusion, and worse, they were doing it without love. Paul writes, "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy" (1 Corinthians 14:1). Why did Paul prioritize prophecy? Because "prophecy edifies the whole congregation." When God's Word is shared in a way everyone can understand, the entire church is built up. Paul wasn't against spiritual gifts—he was against disorder and confusion that prevented understanding. "Let all things be done unto edifying," Paul insists in 1 Corinthians 14:26. This simple phrase captures God's heart for our gatherings. When we come together, everything should contribute to building up the body of Christ.

The Purpose of Our Gatherings

What principles can we draw from Paul's instructions that apply to our church today?

We Come Together to Understand God's Word

God has revealed His truth to us, and He wants us to understand it. One of my goals in preaching is to model how to study Scripture and show you that God's Word is understandable. But understanding isn't the end goal—obedience is. As Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). God's Word brings life and light when we hear it, understand it, and obey it.

We Come Together to Be Edified

"Let all things be done unto edifying" (1 Corinthians 14:26). When we gather, we should leave different than when we came. We want to be transformed by our coming together. The Word of God and the body of Christ work together to build us up.

We Come Together to Worship God

In 1 Corinthians 14:25, Paul describes how someone might respond to hearing God's Word clearly proclaimed: "Falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is in you of a truth." Worship isn't just about singing—though that's important. True worship happens when God's Word reveals what's in our hearts, and we respond in humility. Sometimes that means kneeling, confessing, "God, I just heard something preached and there's a gap between what Your Word says and where I'm at. Cleanse me. Make me what I ought to be."

We Come Together to Love Each Other, Not Ourselves

Life isn't about us. Our church doesn't assemble because of any individual. We gather because of the Lord. First Corinthians 13 reminds us that love remains when everything else passes away. "A stage is where people perform. A stage is where actors act," my father would say. "What needs to happen here is that the Word of God is proclaimed... what's being sung is not sung as a performance for a congregation. It's an offering of worship for an audience of one."

Putting It Into Practice

Jesus demonstrated the ultimate example of love when He laid down His life for us. "Greater love has no man than this, but that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). The One who deserves all glory and honor washed His disciples' feet and then gave His life on the cross. I am forgiven because He was forsaken. I am accepted because He was condemned. I'm alive because He died and rose again. "Because He lives, we can live also." Are you thankful for the love of God? "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). When we gather as a church, let's remember these purposes: to understand God's Word, to be built up together, to worship our Savior, and to love one another as Christ loved us.
